The contracted deliverables include:
Caption artistic direction
  • Establish the technical and musical standard for the battery and front ensemble across the season.
  • Develop and maintain the caption's technique program, exercise package, and warm-up sequence.
  • Direct percussion rehearsal blocks and lead percussion-specific sectional and caption-wide instruction.
  • Provide the design and arranging team with structured feedback on percussion writing, including playability, scoring density, and revision priorities.
Instructional team coordination
  • Coordinate the percussion instructional team — battery technicians, front ensemble technicians, and any additional percussion staff engaged by Eclipse — including assignment of instructional focus areas across the season.
  • Recommend percussion instructional staff to Eclipse corps administration for engagement.
  • Maintain consistent technique language and evaluation criteria across the instructional team.
Member development and audition process
  • Design and administer the percussion audition and placement process, including audition packet content, evaluation criteria, and part assignments.
  • Assess member progress against caption standards and communicate development priorities to members and the instructional team.
  • Identify and escalate member retention or readiness concerns to corps administration through the organization's designated channels.
Rehearsal planning and integration
  • Build the percussion caption's rehearsal plan for each period and submit block time requests to the Ensemble Coordinator within the published planning window.
  • Coordinate with brass, color guard, and visual caption leads on shared ensemble objectives, tempo and timing conventions, and integration points.
  • Lead percussion involvement in full-ensemble segments as sequenced by the Ensemble Coordinator.
Equipment and inventory stewardship
  • Advise Eclipse on percussion equipment needs, including instrument specification, head and mallet consumables, and replacement priorities.
  • Coordinate with the tour and operations team on percussion equipment condition, transport requirements, and field setup configuration.
  • Report damage, loss, or maintenance needs affecting organization-owned or leased percussion instruments to corps administration promptly.
Season documentation
  • Maintain the caption's technique and exercise materials in a form transferable to Eclipse at the end of the engagement.
  • Deliver an end-of-season caption summary, including equipment condition notes, member development outcomes, and recommendations for the following season.
Contractor Qualifications
Required
  • Demonstrated experience as a percussion caption head, percussion coordinator, or lead percussion instructor with a competitive marching ensemble, drum corps, indoor percussion ensemble, or comparable organization.
  • Command of both battery and front ensemble pedagogy, technique systems, and rehearsal methodology.
  • Ability to coordinate a multi-person instructional team toward a consistent technical standard.
  • Score reading fluency and the ability to communicate effectively with arrangers and the design team on percussion writing.
  • Availability for the full contracted schedule of camps, spring training, and tour dates identified in the Statement of Work.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background screening and compliance with Eclipse's youth protection requirements as a condition of engagement.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to contracted rehearsal and tour sites.
Preferred
  • Prior caption head experience with a DCI, DCA, or WGI organization.
  • Percussion arranging experience, or established working relationships with marching percussion arrangers.
  • Experience building a technique program from the ground up for a developing or newly formed ensemble.
  • Familiarity with electronics integration in the front ensemble, including amplification, sampling, and signal routing.
  • Engagement Terms
This is an independent contractor engagement, not employment. Applicants should understand the following before applying:
  • Compensation: [COMPENSATION STRUCTURE AND AMOUNT TO BE DETERMINED]. Fees are negotiated and fixed in the Statement of Work and are paid against contractor invoice in accordance with the agreed payment schedule.
  • Tax treatment: Eclipse does not withhold federal, state, or local income tax, Social Security, or Medicare from contractor fees. The contractor is solely responsible for all applicable self-employment and income taxes. Eclipse will issue Form 1099-NEC for the calendar year in accordance with IRS reporting thresholds.
  • Benefits: The contractor is not eligible for employee benefits, paid leave, workers' compensation coverage as an Eclipse employee, or unemployment insurance through Eclipse.
  • Control of work: The contractor controls the manner and means of delivering the contracted services. Eclipse specifies the result — a functioning ensemble rehearsal framework delivered across the contracted dates — not the process by which the contractor achieves it.
  • Tools and equipment: The contractor supplies their own equipment, including computing devices, communication tools, and scheduling software, unless otherwise specified in the Statement of Work.
  • Non-exclusivity: The contractor is free to provide services to other organizations, including other performing arts organizations, provided such engagements do not conflict with the contracted Eclipse dates or the confidentiality terms of the agreement.
  • Insurance: The contractor is responsible for maintaining their own insurance coverage appropriate to the services provided. Coverage requirements, if any, will be specified in the contractor agreement.
  • Agreement required: Engagement is contingent on execution of Eclipse's Independent Contractor Agreement and the associated Statement of Work, along with a completed Form W-9.
